Gartner predicts that by 2026, 70% of identity-based security strategies will fail unless organizations adopt context-based access policies that are continuous and consistent.
From mounting pressure in the macroeconomic environment to waves of technology such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and an ever-changing threat landscape, businesses must address multiple priorities. Whether it’s delivering exceptional customer experiences, empowering the workforce, unleashing developer talent, or maintaining a strong security posture, identity remains the key to addressing today’s biggest challenges. These challenges demand agile, reliable, and adaptable solutions for identity and access management across every organization.
At Okta’s recent Oktane 2023 conference in San Francisco, attendees discussed how artificial intelligence (AI) is radically transforming identity security and how organizations can leverage this technology to address ever-evolving security challenges. With the rise of cyber threats and the complexity of today’s technology infrastructure, AI is emerging as a crucial ally in protecting corporate identities and data.
Beyond SSO and MFA
In the search for new solutions, we must go beyond single sign-on (SSO) and multi-factor authentication (MFA). AI is transforming the role of identity in security. In 2019, 96% of phishing attacks were blocked using MFA and SMS, while 86% of breaches resulting from credential abuse were prevented, according to reports presented at Oktane 2023.
It is essential to adopt a consistent approach, moving away from static security architectures and focusing on dynamic access policies to ensure identity-based security. It is crucial to think in terms of continuity, constantly assessing risks and trust levels and applying controls throughout user sessions rather than relying on simple “gateway” decisions to grant access. These recommendations are fundamental to an effective IAM strategy in a dynamic security environment.

AI is an essential ally today due to its ability to revolutionize identity security. The introduction of Identity Threat Protection (ITP) with Okta AI marks a significant shift in how we approach identity-based security. ITP acts as a unified layer that cohesively integrates the various components of your technology infrastructure. This will enable nearly frictionless integrations and real-time risk assessments after authentication.
“Malicious actors are becoming more sophisticated, but we use the power of AI to keep you safe—one step ahead.” Todd McKinnon, CEO and co-founder of Okta.
As a result, AI becomes a strategic ally by enhancing the detection of and response to identity-based threats, maximizing existing investments, and creating a closed-loop system that connects various security tools, with the ability to anticipate and respond quickly to ever-changing threats.
